Setting up a Chapter

You can genuinely change lives by setting up a Cycling Without Age Scotland (CWAS) Chapter. It’s fun and fulfilling and we are here to help you get up and running and to support you every step of the way.

A leading member of a global movement currently operating in 50 countries and through 2,200 Chapters, CWAS holds the Scotland Country Licence agreement with the international HQ of Cycling Without Age, which is in Denmark. The licence specifies how the licensee should operate and influences much of the terminology we use, for example the word “Chapter” itself.

Once a Chapter is established, it will be provided with a full set of guidance documents and templates that are needed to ensure its smooth and successful running.

The process of setting up a Chapter starts with a conversation with a representative from CWAS. S/he will discuss with the individual (or group) who has made the enquiry the most important initial points for consideration, for example: are there already any existing Chapters in the area proposed and what category of Chapter is being considered (i.e. Care Home, Community or “Other”)?

S/he will also cover other important topics, for example the other volunteers you’ll need; fundraising and publicity, and the support in those activities that we provide; storage; and insurance, technical and maintenance processes. Again, we give you full support in those areas and have organisation-wide policies and contracts in place for you to access.

You’ll also get full information about the training we’ll provide and about the banking support and facilities we can offer. Other subjects that will be covered will include finding a suitable and appropriate local mechanic and the PVG (the Scottish Government’s “Protecting of Vulnerable Groups” scheme managed by Disclosure Scotland) requirements that we have to fulfil in connection with all our volunteers and staff.

The key thing to remember is that the process is not complicated nor long-winded, and we’re with you at every stage!
